Samal Park

Type: landscape

Location: Astana, Kazakhstan

Stage: built

Client:

Samal Park is a concept for a new park territory in Astana. The project is envisioned as a large-scale ecological public space that connects residential neighborhoods, links key recreational destinations across the city, and at the same time preserves a natural environment in the heart of a fast-growing district.

For the Big Picture, this was the development of a comprehensive strategy for the site - from the master plan and functional zoning to the ecological concept and spatial use scenarios. The result is a project where urban infrastructure, public life, and the natural environment work together.

The idea of the park is that of a living, multifunctional environment. Natural trails and quiet retreat areas coexist with family and sports spaces, cultural venues, restaurants, coworking areas, and a community center. This zoning allows the park to operate at different rhythms and serve very different users - from families with children and sports enthusiasts to those seeking calm, waterside walks, and a closer connection to nature.

A separate focus of the project is ecology. The concept includes the restoration of the lake, water purification, support for biodiversity, the creation of eco-infrastructure for birds and small animals, and the introduction of environmental education practices. As a result, Samal Park is conceived as a place where people can not only relax, but also truly experience how nature and the city can exist in balance
