Theater in Almaty

Type: an interior concept for the entrance and foyer

Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan

Stage: concept

Client:

This project for a theater in Almaty is built around the idea of the entrance as a threshold between the city and the stage. The space is not meant simply to welcome visitors, but to shift their mood from the very first moment — introducing the atmosphere of the theater and gently separating everyday life from a world of imagination.

The concept is inspired by childhood itself - especially by the ability to imagine new worlds and constantly expand the boundaries of reality. That is why the entrance space is imagined as a way into a fairytale, a moment where the theatrical experience begins before the performance even starts. Sculptural art objects create a clear visual focus, while subtle linear lighting emphasizes the geometry of the existing architecture and gently guides visitors toward the interior.

The image of the Blue Bird became an important part of the project. It works both as an art object and as an easily recognizable symbol that brings more emotion and identity to the entrance space.

The foyer is conceived as a minimalist, light-driven interior. Linear ceiling lighting extends the geometry of the entrance canopy and helps create a natural transition between the outside and the interior.

Here, light becomes the main design tool. It defines spatial thresholds, supports wayfinding, and ties the interior into one coherent system that naturally continues the language of the existing building.
